What your Osteopath in Barry would do; Suffering from a bad back? Welcome to the club! Spinal pain is one of the largest causes of missed days at work, and costs the NHS and businesses billions every year.
When you come to see us, the first thing we want to do is establish that the likelihood of there being a serious underlying pathology is low. The next question to ask is "which tissues are most likely to be affected?" and then "Why have they been affected at this point in time?" Once that is done, we follow the pattern of pain and dysfunction to work out all the different elements that are contributing to the problem. Then we will discuss with you what we can do to diminish the pain, bring health back to the affected tissues and strengthen the area so as to prevent relapse. Rob is also particularly interested in ergonomics, and the way office work is contributing to / causing spinal conditions in the UK. If you are a business owner, get in contact to see if he can help your business deal with this increasing issue. |
Why Osteopathy? The great strength of Osteopathy,
and one which sets it apart. By using observation and palpation (touch), we aim to find the different stresses and dysfunctions (imbalances) in the various body tissues. We can trace these dysfunctions throughout the body, and find the predisposing factors that may have caused the problem. These factors may maintain the dysfunction, reduce the effectiveness of treatment, or cause a relapse in the near future. However, once they have been identified we can work together to manage both the "painful bit" and those other areas that are making the situation worse. We do this by using a broad range of physical treatment techniques, exercise programmes, stretches, ergonomics, posture... etc. |

Please note - this case study write up is only an example of what Osteopathy does.
It is given here to give an idea of osteopathic thinking, especially for those who have never seen an Osteopath before.
You do not need, in any way, to match this patient in order to consult with us! Neither does it need to be an "extreme" situation like this. Most of our upper / lower back patients are workers who find themselves sitting or standing throughout most of the day, stooping over desks, tills or machines, and then develop stiffness, aches and pains in their spines.
