What your family Osteopath in Barry would do; If you suffer from headaches or neck pain, the first thing we would want to establish is that it is unlikely that there is a serious underlying pathology going on. Once that is done, we follow the pattern of pain and dysfunction to find out which tissues we would consider the most likely to be involved, why it happened in the first place, at this time in life, and what we can do to diminish the pain, bring health back to the affected tissues and strengthen the area so as to prevent relapse.
This is no easy task! A great multitude of factors can cause or increase pain; anatomical/structural, physiological, psychological, social... ...and even then, although one might feel pain in the head and neck, the reason the pain is there may be because of a non-symptomatic shoulder or upper back problem, which in turn might be caused by an imbalance in the hips. |
Why Osteopathy? The great strength of Osteopathy,
and one which sets it apart. By using observation and palpation (touch), we aim to find the different stresses and dysfunctions (imbalances) in the various body tissues. We can trace these dysfunctions throughout the body, and find the predisposing factors that may have caused the problem. These factors may maintain the dysfunction, reduce the effectiveness of treatment, or cause a relapse in the near future. However, once they have been identified we can work together to manage both the "painful bit" and those other areas that are making the situation worse. We do this by using a broad range of physical treatment techniques, exercise programmes, stretches, ergonomics, posture... etc. |
