What your Osteopath in Barry would do; Many people suffer from shoulder pain - be it the affects of arthritis in the older lady or gentleman, or from over-doing it in sports. Approximately 30% of patients at Highlight Osteopaths suffer from shoulder complaints. The first thing we need to work out is, where exactly is the shoulder pain?
"Shoulder pain" is often described as "between the shoulder blades". Other times it is "At the point of the shoulder". At other times, "The round shoulder bit and down the arm". Very often the older patient describes that they cannot lift their arm above the shoulder, or pick up a kettle. Once we know where the pain is coming from, we can formulate ideas as to which structures might be causing the dysfunction, and then we can test those theories by examination. If the examination agrees with the theory, we can treat the whole joint and surrounding structures. We will discuss with you what we can do to diminish the likelihood of relapse, bring health back to the affected tissues and strengthen the area so as to prevent relapse. Rob is also particularly interested in ergonomics, and the way office work is contributing to / causing neck and shoulder conditions in the UK. If you are a business owner, get in contact to see if he can help your business deal with this increasing issue. |
Why Osteopathy? The great strength of Osteopathy,
and one which sets it apart. By using observation and palpation (touch), we aim to find the different stresses and dysfunctions (imbalances) in the various body tissues. We can trace these dysfunctions throughout the body, and find the predisposing factors that may have caused the problem. These factors may maintain the dysfunction, reduce the effectiveness of treatment, or cause a relapse in the near future. However, once they have been identified we can work together to manage both the "painful bit" and those other areas that are making the situation worse. We do this by using a broad range of physical treatment techniques, exercise programmes, stretches, ergonomics, posture... etc. |

They are given here to give an idea of osteopathic thinking, especially for those who have bever seen an Osteopath before.
You do not need, in any way, to match these patients in order to consult with us! Neither does it need to be an "extreme" situation like this. Most of our shoulder patients are the elderly with arthritic shoulders, workers who find themselves stooping over desks, and sports men and women who who "over do it".
